Fun Topsy Tail Bubble Braids For Spring

Fun Topsy Tail Bubble Braids For Spring

I can’t help but look at photos now with my long hair and think how the heck did I let it get this long?! I digress, now with my short hair, this style won’t be happening anytime soon. But in honor of spring, I think this is the sweetest little hairstyle to try. It’s so easy to do and is a great way to keep your hair out of your face but in a way more fun and interesting way than just a ponytail. All you need for this hairstyle are a few simple rubberbands (I use these) and a teasing brush.

How To Do Topsy Tail Bubble Braids

A little tip for creating this look, the grittier and messier your hair is, the better. I tried doing this on my silky straight hair and it looked pitiful. We reshot it and instead made sure my hair was way messier. This style can also be done one of two ways. You can either just make the bubbles and not do the topsy tail, or do the bubbles and add in the topsy tail. Rmember these? You can totally use one if you need to, but your fingers work just fine too! Here’s how to get the look.

Step One - Start With Gritty Messy Hair

Step One – Start With Gritty Messy Hair

Yes I know this sounds crazy, but it’s a must. I let my hair air dry with the Kristin Ess Air Dry Spray so it gives a grittier texture. My hair is naturally silky with a slight wave so this helps to get it messier. I then also added some Kristin Ess working texture spray for additional grit and volume. Then I did a little back combing with a teasing brush. You don’t have to go crazy here, but do it a little to add even more messiness.

Step Two - Separate Your Hair And Put Them In Two Pigtails

You’ll then take your hair and part it down the middle (or wherever your natural part is) and put each section into a hairband.

This step is optional, but I liked adding a topsy tail right from the start. Once you do the topsy tail, definitely pull apart the pieces to add even more texture and volume.

You’ll then work your way down the pigtail and continue to add a hairtie a few inches down, split, loop through, and pull apart.

Step Five - Pull Apart Your Topsy Tail Braid

Pull Apart Your Topsy Tail Braid

It’s SUPER important for a voluminous and textured look to pull apart your braids. Be sure to hold the braid with one hand and then use the other to gently pull it apart. A good tip is to get your finger nails into it to separate it out. It takes a little time and finicking around so don’t just pull like crazy because you’ll pull out your hairstyle.
