A few weekends ago my girlfriends and I embarked on what we thought was just lunch, but turned into a full blown Inman Park food (and drink) tour. We ended up hitting 6 different places ordering something at all of them. It ended up being one of the best days ever this summer making some fun memories. One memorable stop was The Luminary for their rosé slushies. Ironically, we also ended up at Victory for their Jack and Coke slushies….but, the rosé ones were new for us and were insanely delicious. They were cool and refreshing but not too sweet. I knew I had to figure out how to make a rosé slushy at home as soon as possible.
I scoured the internet for recipes and started to realize that this was quickly becoming a new cocktail obsession and is technically called ‘frosé’… Genius. So I had to find out how to make a rosé slushy as soon as possible. I ended up going the route of freezing the wine and blending it all with some watermelon to add a little sweetness to it. The recipe is insanely simple and delicious and can be made well in advance for parties. Just in time for National Watermelon Day, these slushies make for a great weekend treat with friends.
A few things to note about making this recipe (full recipe at the bottom of the pot). You’ll want to pour the entire bottle of rosé into a jug of some sort prior to freezing it. Do not, I repeat, do not leave it in the bottle. Once it sits in the freezer for several hours, it’ll be nearly impossible to get the semi frozen rosé out without half of it melting on you. It will never entirely freeze due to the alcohol content, which is perfect. You may also need to adjust amount of ice depending on the alcohol content and how hard your rose ends up getting. Just play around with the amount of ice cubes and watermelon until you get the consistency that you like.
And in honor of National Watermelon Day how about this watermelon printed dress?
- One bottle of your favorite rose wine
- 1 cup of watermelon cubed
- handful of ice cubes
- Pour your wine into a large container, one that will allow you to easily pour it out once it partially freezes. Do not keep it in the wine bottle because it is too hard to remove it from the bottle once it starts to harden.
- Freeze for 6 hours or more until it's mostly frozen. It won't 100% freeze due to the alcohol content
- Add all items, wine, watermelon and ice cubes, to a blender and crush.
- Place in freezer to harden more if you like, or serve immediately
Easily make this in advance and just add it to a blender before serving.
