My Guide To Closet Staples Worth Investing In

classic closet essentials to invest in

Having a closet full of great essential pieces that will last you for years to come is truly the goal for me. I’m not huge on super trendy things. And if I do go trendy, I usually choose something fairly affordable in the case it doesn’t last very long. There are definitely closet essentials, basics and even down to bras and shapewear that I shop for with the intention of keeping them for many years. Sometimes they may be a bit more of a splurge. Not always though! I wanted to share the few things I always look to invest in good quality and classic pieces.

Closet Essentials Worth Investing In

A Good Blazer

This could also be a good “whatever type of jacket” you like best. But I’m a blazer person when it comes to feeling dressed up. So investing in a good one that is flattering and works within your wardrobe is key. I love this longer oversized one that I’ve worn time and time again. It’s a tad trendy, but it was super affordable. I also have several good classic blazers that I rotate through as well.

Bras and shapwear to invest in SKIMS

Bras + Shapewear

I’ve done entire posts dedicated to bras because I think they’re so important to invest in to not only feel your best, but also look good in too. Then there’s shapewear. Which is essential for smoothing when wearing anything super slinky, or fitted if you ask me. I recently picked up SKIMS for the first time and love how they fit over the you know who competitor. I also am in love with the one-legged ones, the Solution Shorts. They’re perfect for those high slit dresses and skirts.

jeans and heels

When investing in a stiletto I think it’s important to keep in mind the heel height first and foremost. What will you be doing in these heels most? Do you need a lower heel or are you fine with a higher one? I think a mid-heel is more versatile and you’ll wear it more often.

A few splurge-worthy brands when it comes to a comfortable stiletto are Taryn Rose and Tamara Mellon. For a more affordable option, I do love my Sam Edelman, Vince Camuto, and Schutz for high heels.

Button Downs

A great button down can be worn with denim shorts, trousers, a pencil skirt, and really anything in between. They’re perfect for work, but also for just feeling put together. Pair them with jeans and sneakers for a casual cool girl look too.

I finally invested in a few silk button-downs that I feel great in. From my Everlane ones to my new Sezane one to the left, I now feel like I have great button-downs that will last me for years to come.

Comfortable Flat

Whether it’s a loafer or a ballet flat, a comfortable flat that you can count on will take you from the office, to dinner, to the weekend. And you’ll never wonder if you’ll get blisters too. I’ve become a fan of the M. Gemi loafer and also love my Sam Edelman ones too. Comfortable and classic!

Good Jeans

To me, good jeans is everything. I live in them. I believe a good quality denim is 100% worth the splurge if you wear them often. They’re more flattering and will last longer than going the cheap route. I don’t think you need to spend A TON. But I do think around $100 is a good spot to be at. Madewell and Everlane are my personal favorites. You can also check out my denim guide here!

Everyday Bag

Purses can be a huge investment sometimes, but I believe a good bag can last you years. And no, I’m not talking spending thousands of dollars either. No one needs a $2,000 bag unless you have an insane disposable income. But, spending anywhere from $200-$400 on a great bag I think can be worth it.

When it comes to a good everyday bag I think you should have at least two. A great tote and a crossbody or maybe something in between based on your personal style. For totes, I love the Madewell Transport Tote. It’s under $200, will last you years and is great for going to work, or traveling with. For a crossbody, I swear by my Welden Bags.

Three million people in the US filed for unemployment benefits this week. Nobody’s thinking about closet splurges. This feels very tone deaf.

This post couldn’t have come at a better time! I’m using my time social distancing as a chance to get my apartment in order and just did a purge of my closet and put away all of my heavy winter pieces and can’t wait to get some spring/summer shopping done! Time for some fun floral blouses!
