One of the things I was MOST excited about when heading to Hawaii was indulging in the real deal acai bowls. I was on a hunt to find the best acai bowl in Maui the second we landed. It’s a food trend that hasn’t entirely kicked off in Atlanta. There are a few spots that claim to make them, but they’re usually not like anything I’ve ever had on the west coast. Soupy, made with sorbet, and topped with unimpressive fruit. I get it, it’s the south, we do fried chicken really well, not so much acai bowls. I love this fruity pick me up so much that I actually make them at home a lot (recipe coming soon).

All over the island, and on every breakfast menu, were acai bowls. If you’re not familiar with them, it’s kind of like a super thick, semi-frozen fruit smoothie topped with fresh fruit, granola, coconut and honey (or any toppings you like really). They’re a great way to cool off and get some fresh fruit in your life. We had variations from ones with purple sweet potato on them (probably my favorite) to passionfruit and mango. The combinations are endless. We stopped into Paia Bowls and enjoyed these sitting outside in the shade. It was heaven. I think this was probably one of the things I’ve missed most since being home. To be totally honest, I could 100% eat one of these acai bowls every single day. It’s unlikely I could ever get sick of them, they were the best!

YES! I am obsessed!! Luckily, here in Charlotte we have one place that knows how to truly make them. However, when I was in Charlottesville, VA last month, I had the BEST one I’ve ever had. Surprising spot to know how to make a great Acai bowl. All of your pics of them from Hawaii were making me so jealous – as is this post haha.
